BLACKLEGGS TROUT NURSERY became a vision for a few men over 20 years
ago.
"There were 12 guys who pitched in and bought trout to fish in the
stream in 1984. We kept it private for a while. Some other
guys we knew started asking to pay to fish the stocked areas. when
the fish lived through the winter, Buckey (Ray Grafton) and I decided we
may have something. I contacted the Waterways Conservation Officer,
Caveney, and investigated the possibility of raising and stocking trout on
a permanent basis. With the growing interest from fisherman in our
community, we pulled together a public meeting, which had more than 100
supporters. The groundwork for the Nursery was started early in
1986."
"Before the nursery could be built, we needed a lot of commitment
and help from our community. The Blackleggs Trout Nursery received
some generous donations which included the ground where it was built,
donated by the Blaisin family. Local businesses; such as Lucerne
Mine #8 and #9, Mickey's Excavating, Contractor Lentz, Central Cambria
Drilling, Lawton Cement, David Trucking, and R&P Coal Company, and
many others; donated materials, time, and abilities. Also, without
the support, time, materials, and money of members and non-members, the
project would have never become a reality."
"We began organizing the Kids Fish For Fun Day in 1987, when the
Nursery was only a year old. In the early days of the event, all of
the founders had young children and it was a great way for our families to
spend the day together. Over the past 17 years, the event has grown
in both the number of children participating and the amount of sponsors
and volunteers. As with the Nursery, Kids Fish For Fun Day would not
be possible without the support of the community and our numerous
sponsors."
"Because of the commitment of many people today, the Nursery and
Kids Fish For Fun Day are still a success."

Our Mission
"To
restore the Blacklegs Creek Watershed to
its natural condition so that it may support a
healthy aquatic habitat from the headwaters to
its confluence with the Kiskiminetas River"

Where Are We?
Many people confuse our
group with the Black Lick Creek Watershed Association due to our similar names.
We sometimes refer to ourselves as the forgotten watershed in southwestern
Pennsylvania due to our relatively small size and limited exposure to this
point. The Blacklegs Creek watershed is located in southern Indiana County with
a small portion of the watershed extending just across the Armstrong County line
in the west. The watershed encompasses an approximate 45 square acre area. A
sketch map of our watershed can be seen by selecting the thumbnail below.
