Fast Facts

Building off of our first round success in the Growing Greener Program, we decided to apply in round 2 for the first phase of one of our watersheds largest polluters.  The money was granted and the Big Run #2 was completed in the fall of 2003.

Project Background

Big Run, a major tributary to Blacklegs Creek, is one of the biggest polluters in the watershed. In fact, if it were not for the excessive impacts from abandoned mine

drainage to Big Run, we would be able to stock trout the entire stretch of Blacklegs Creek. The importance of remediating the problems in Big Run is obvious. The Big Run #2 discharge represented the first major impact to Big Run, even though a few smaller discharges were located upstream. According to data taken from 1999 to summer 2003, the average flow of the discharge is 1,250 gallons per minute. The average acidity is 89 mg/l and the pH is between 5.0 and 5.3. The discharge also has a

small amount of metals present with aluminum at 3.1 mg/l and iron at 0.4 mg/l. The treatment system design consists mainly of a large limestone treatment pond and a polishing wetland. Also, due to the small aluminum content of the water, a flushing
system for removing aluminum deposits within the limestone pond will be added. Although the flow and chemistry of this discharge changed drastically with the high flow conditions experienced this past winter, the final treatment system has been shown to neutralize the pH and drop out the metals.  Due to several other major discharges located downstream of the #2 discharge, this project will not restore Big Run to a high quality condition. This project is the fist step in several necessary steps to significantly improving water quality in Big Run, and ultimately Blackleggs Creek.

Current Events

Big Run Phase II is well underway.  The final treatment system will remediate AMD from Big Run #7 and pave the way to remediating #8 at a later date.  Discussions and negotiations for securing funding for Big Run Phase III and IV are also underway.  The total of Phases III and IV could exceed $700,000.
